Borgo Tre Rose, an ancient history…
The known history of Borgo Tre Rose began at the end of the 12th century when the house and tower of Marchesi di Valiano were already overlooking the hills of Castello di Valiano and was the home of Santa Margherita da Cortona (1247 – 1297). The concubine of the noble Arsenio del Pecora, Signore di Valiano, Margherita lived in Borgo Tre Rose until the tragic death of her companion at which time she entered religious seclusion, dedicating herself to pray and charity in the Franciscan Order of the Poverelle.

The Vagnucci purchased Borgo Tre Rose in 1450 and built the villa (now near the hotel) where the family's crest can still be seen: a bear with three roses, one yellow, one blue and one red, which gave the village its name. Cardinal Silvio Passerini (1469-1529), a friend of the powerful Medici family of Florence and the patron of Vasari, wanted Villa Belvedere, which is part of the Hotel Borgo Tre Rose. During the years of the Granducato of Tuscany, Borgo Tre Rose returned to the control of Valiano, who handled its affairs.

Today, the beauty of the Borgo Tre Rose can be admired by everyone who climbs up the hill. Besides our guests, who speak of it with enthusiasm, there is Frances Mayes, the American writer who loved Tuscany and, in her best sellers, Under the Tuscan Sun (which was made into a film with the same name) and Bella Tuscany, speaks of the beauty and tranquility of the place.
