What is the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano<\/strong> and what role does it play?
\nWe talk about it in this post because appreciating Montepulciano also means knowing how its Nobile wine is born and what characterizes it. A theme strictly related to Borgo Tre Rose, as anyone who has already stayed in our hotel and tasted the wines produced in our cellars knows; among these wines there is the Nobile<\/a>, awarded several times (https:\/\/tenutatrerose.it\/it\/vini\/santa-caterina<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The other reason why we talk about Vino Nobile is that in 2020 there is an important celebration: the fortieth anniversary of the first DOCG label<\/strong>, assigned in 1980 to this Montepulciano wine. The future of this Tuscan excellence comes from the past, because thanks to this identification a new era has begun for Italian wine and the path of protecting and promoting Nobile has been consolidated globally.<\/p>\n

How the DOCG label was born<\/h2>\n

\"Vino<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forests (this was the name of the Ministry in 1980) released the first D.O.C.G. Label to indicate a wine with a Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin to the Vino Nobile<\/strong> and today that label is kept in the offices of the Consortium; the classification is reserved for wines that have been DOC for at least 10 years and which are considered of particular value, in relation to the intrinsic qualitative characteristics, compared to the average of those of similar wines thus classified, due to traditional natural, human and historical factors and that have acquired a reputation and commercial enhancement at national and international level.<\/p>\n

In 2010 the procedure changed following the implementation of the new European legislation and today there are 77 Italian DOCG wines. In any case, the action of the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, born in 1965, was fundamental to promote the territory and help even other other Italian specialties, that can follow the example of the Consorzio.<\/p>\n

What is the Noble Wine Consortium<\/h2>\n

\"Vino<\/p>\n

Today the Consortium’s wine growers are 230 and represent more than 90% of the vineyard area, while the bottlers are 76 members. The activities of the Consortium include the Preview of Vino Nobile (held every year in February) and participation in events and fairs in Italy and abroad. Of course, due to the ongoing health emergency, some events have been postponed, for example the Preview of Vino Nobile will take place in May 2021<\/strong> (from 14 to 21 May), so as to also strengthen the link between the exceptional of local products and the unique landscape, particularly appreciated in spring.<\/p>\n

The Consortium also deals with promotional activities through media and public relations activities, offers a technical assistance service to associated companies, organizing technical training meetings, and furthermore manages the Enoliteca, located in the Fortezza di Montepulciano (where there are also the offices of the Consortium), the headquarters restored thanks to the intervention of the producers.<\/p>\n

\"Where<\/p>\n

One of the novelties of 2020, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the DOCG, is the obligation to insert the geographical term „Tuscany“ on the label and it was decided to make the characteristics of this wine better known with the publication of the periodical magazine „Storia del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano „, which includes original studies and researches concerning the quality of grapes grown in historical times (especially from the XVI to the XVIII century), the method of cultivation, the quality of the wines produced and, above all, the wine production technology .<\/p>\n
