Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Servi

Santa Maria dei Servi is the oldest church in Montepulciano that still exists.

It is a church of the fourteenth century whose original facade remains little because after the restructuring occurred between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it was transformed with a baroque style.

Currently the interior of the church has a single nave with a central altar and two sides. The elegant decorations that enhance the surfaces were created by Andrea Pozzo.

There are preserved a Madonna with Child attributed to the school of Duccio di Buoninsegna and two frescoes: a fourteenth-century Crucifix and the Madonna della Santoreggia, from the Sienese school of the fourteenth century.

Chiesa del Gesù

That of the Jesus is one of the most recent churches in Montepulciano. Begun in 1961, the Church of the Gesù was born in Baroque style by the hand of Giovan Battista Origoni, was later renewed by Andrea Pozzo and then completed in 1712 by Sebastiano Cipriani, to be consecrated in 1716.

The church is located in the center of the city, it has a central plan and three altars dedicated to the Most Holy Name of Jesus, to the Madonna of the Three Avenues and to the Sacred Heart.

Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the Cathedral of Montepulciano and is the main Catholic place of worship in the city. Built between 1586 and 1680, the church was consecrated only in 1712.

The interior, of clear Florentine ancestry, is austere and elegant, with a Latin cross plan and three naves. The side windows are covered with cross vaults and on the walls there are chapels with barrel vaults.

One of the most important works in the Cathedral is on the main altar and is the Triptych of the Assumption, created by Taddeo di Bartolo in 1401.

While, placed in different points of the church, you can also admire the Funeral Monument of Bartolomeo Aragazzi in Carrara marble built by Michelozzo between 1427 and 1436.

Convento di San Francesco

In the heart of Montepulciano stands the Convent of San Francesco. Dating back to the XVII century, the current structure dates back to the XVII century, thanks to the enlargement works carried out by the Franciscan Order.

The building is an extremely simple architectural work, with a red brick facade and a Latin cross plan with a single nave.

Chiesa di Santa Lucia

Built in 1653 by a project by Flaminio del Turco in the homonymous square, the Church of Santa Lucia is a recent example of Baroque construction.

The element that characterizes the façade is the scenographic portal framed by columns with a festooned Ionic capital, whose jambs are adorned with volute-shaped ears from which descend large pendants of fruit.

The interior has a single nave, restored in 1822, and preserves a wooden crucifix of the sixteenth century built by Giovan Battista Alesi.

Chiesa di Sant’Agostino

An ancient Catholic place of worship in the historic center of San Gimignano.

The construction of the Church of Sant’Agostino begun in 1280 and completed in 1298 and features both Romanesque and Gothic style. Made entirely of brick, with the classic gothic windows that are slender on the walls, the structure is simple and austere.

Chiesa di Sant’Agnese

The church of Sant’Agnese is a small church erected in 1306 by the same saint Agnese Segnialla, which was completely renovated towards the end of the 1600s and for this reason presents elements that characterize different eras. The façade, in fact, has preserved the fourteenth-century portal while the bell tower dates back to the early 1700s.

The plan has a single nave with a high altar that still today preserves the body of the saint. Among the major works of the church, the fourteenth-century fresco with the „Madonna and Child“ of the school of Simone Martini, a fresco with the „Madonna del latte“ of the Sienese school of the mid-fifteenth century and a „Crucifix“ in school wood renana of the ‚200.

Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie

Just outside Montepulciano, the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is in the direction of Nottola.

Built in 1561, the church was consecrated only in 1741.

A portico with three arches leads into the church, consisting of a single nave and decorated with rich eighteenth-century gilded stuccos.

The image of the Madonna delle Grazie is set among the statues of the Annunciation and of the Archangel Gabriel, in a large glazed terracotta.

Chiesa di San Biagio

A last magnificent example of religious architecture in Montepulciano is the Church of San Biagio. This, unfortunately, is no longer available for the celebration of weddings, but it is worth mentioning for its importance and impressive beauty.
